This paperdescribes the investigations undertaken by the Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Birmingham, Alabama to understand the causes forthe increase in lost water, and develop and implement a Water Loss Reduction Plan. The Board was guided by the International Water Association(IWA)/American Water Works Association (AWWA) Best Management Practices inWater Loss Control, and experience gained from participation in the American WaterWorks Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF) Research Project 2928 LeakageManagement Technologies. Thepaper reports on the activities and progress to date. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
