The process of bromate reduction by zero valent iron (Fe(0)) has been foundto be controlled by surface mediated reactions, which are strongly related tothe surface status. The effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on the bromatereduction by Fe(0) was investigated to examine the interactions betweenhumic acid and the iron surface. Small decreases in the bromate reductionwere observed with simultaneous additions of humic acid and bromate. Theadsorbed humic acid on the iron surface was found to compete with bromatereduction by acting as a passive film between inner Fe(0) and bromate.Therefore, the effect of humic acid was more significant by 24-hour presoakingFe(0) with humic acid. The complexation of humic acid with activeferrous ions (Fe(II)) in aqueous phase was found to affect bromate reductionby Fe(II). In this study, functional groups, OHsup-/sup and COOsup-/sup in humic aciddetected by FTIR spectroscopy were found to complex with irons, andconsequently led to the dissolution of iron oxides and irons.
