Full Description

In pilot-scale studies using slow sand filters fed from a natural river source, a layer of crusheddolomite limestone within the filter column was tested for increases of effluent pH andalkalinity, and horizontal-flow roughing filters containing basaltic river rock and calcitelimestone media were compared for water chemistry changes and turbidity removal during claychallenge studies. A calcite-amended rock roughing filter in combination with slow sandfiltration enhanced effluent alkalinity, and this pretreatment filter system produced effluentcompliant with the 1 ntu turbidity regulatory requirement for potable water. The dolomite layeramendment increased effluent pH, alkalinity, and Saturation Index during a sixty-day study, andmineral service life appears acceptable for engineering applications. Includes 17 references, tables, figures.
