To date, little research has been done on the effects thatrecycle of waste filter backwash has on treated water quality.To add to the limited data available on effects of recycle,the authors documented and evaluated the waste filter backwashwater recycle practices at six full-scale surface water treatmentplants in Connecticut.Because each treatment plant operates differently, understandingthe effects of recycle requires detailed and site-specificinformation. The results of this study can help utilitiesimprove operation and monitoring to control potential recycleeffects and gather appropriate information for understandingrecycle practices.
