This paper presents open standards that have enabled water quality parameter communication from sensor to personal computer. The history of the standards and what has become the de facto industry standard is discussed, along with the relationship between the standards and the successful implementation of PC applications like supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and HMI.
