This paper discusses microbial issues within distribution systems which fall into two categories: growth of microorganisms within distribution system biofilms, and intrusion of microbes after treatment. This paper does not discuss microbes passing through inadequate treatment as this problem relates to the integrity of the treatment process rather than the distribution system.
