This paper summarizes Chapter 10 of "Integrated Resources Planning" in the new AWWA manual, M50. Integrated resources planning or IRP is viewed as a process to tie all of the individual elements of water resources planning together. A model IRP process is described to provide a structure for preparing an integrated resource plan. The major differences between conventional water resources planning and IRP include: giving equal consideration to demand management and new supply development; consideration of risk and reliability with shortage management as an option; and, extensive public participation in the process. Selection of an integrated resource plan should consider cost-effectiveness, supply reliability, environmental impacts, financing, and public acceptability. Includes 5 references, tables, figure.
