This paper discusses two promising bacteriologically-based testing methods, alternative indicators sorbitol-fermenting Bifidobacteria and Rhodococcuscoprophilus, that could be used in conjunction with standard coliform testing todiscriminate among human, agricultural livestock, and wildlife sources of waterbornedisease outbreaks.
