Implementation of a biological process in drinking water treatment for removal of biodegradable contaminants that are poorly removed by conventional physicochemical processes is potentially beneficial for reducing THM formation and bacterial regrowth in the distribution system. The general objective of this research was to evaluate biofiltration as a means to remove organic carbon in water supplies. Specific objectives include: evaluate TOC biodegradation potential of four different sources of TOC representing a broad spectrum of composition; investigate factors controlling TOC biodegradation in a continuous-flow system using sand as a support medium for biofilms; and determine the benefits of preozonation to enhance TOC biodegradation.
