Full Description

Capital (construction) and operating costs for the desalination of seawater for drinking water purposes using three processes are presented. The desalting processes include multi-stage flash distillation (MSF), low temperature multiple effect distillation (MED), and reverse osmosis (RO). Capital costs for these facilities can be expected to be: MSF - $5.50 to $12.00 per gallon per day; MED - $4.30 to $9.00 per gallon per day; RO - $4.00 to $7.00 per gallon per day. Operating costs are presented for "single purpose" (water production only) and "dual purpose" (water and power production) facilities. The cost of water is strongly dependent on the plant arrangement (i.e, single or dual purpose) as follows: Single Purpose MSF - $8.00 to $10.00 per thousand gallons treated; MED - $6.50 to $8.00 per thousand gallons treated; RO - $3.75 to $5.20 per thousand gallons treated. Dual Purpose MSF - $6.50 to $8.00 per thousand gallons treated; MED - $3.50 to $6.00 per thousand gallons treated; RO $2.90 to $5.00 per thousand gallons treated.
